Threshers' Berry names to Postseason
All Star Team
Tampa Bay Sports Net
CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Florida State League
announced its 2008 Postseason All-Star Team on Wednesday,
and Quintin Berry was the lone representative from the Clearwater
Threshers. The team was selected by the field managers,
official scorers, and club sports writers from the twelve
teams in the FSL.
Berry, 23, used a strong second-half performance
to propel himself onto the team. He was hitting .235 at
the midseason All-Star Game break but has increased his
average to .276 as of August 27.
A 30-game hit streak that spanned from
July 12 to August 13 allowed his average to spike at a season-best
.285 at the end of the streak.
Berry has played in 130 games this season,
tied for the lead in Clearwater. He has amassed 137 hits
which place the center fielder first on the team and fourth
in the FSL. His 59 walks also lead the Threshers while his
59 runs and 42 RBI are good for second and third on the
team, respectively.
The San Diego native’s speed on the basepaths
also led to his being named to the team. He established
a new Clearwater record for steals in a season by an individual
with his 41st stolen base of the year on August 1 at Fort
Myers.
He has since taken over the league lead
in steals with 50 through August 27.
This marks the third time Berry has been
named to a professional all-star team as he was selected
to the midseason and postseason South Atlantic League All-Star
Teams last season. He was also the recipient of the Paul
Owens Award last year. The honor is given to the player
deemed the best in the Philadelphia Phillies’ minor league
system.
A product of San Diego State University,
Berry was taken in the fifth round of the June 2006 draft
by the Phillies and is in his third professional season.
